Live Poets at Don Bank
Live Poets has featured Australia’s premier poets and unplugged music performers in a myriad of curated events over 28 years at Don Bank. On any given month you will find a lively program of words, music, theatre, art, interviews, quotes, lyrics, monologues, ideas, discussions, stories and conversation – in other languages than English, too! Come and experience it – and lend your voice to the proceedings if you want.
Special Guest appearances in a program of poetry and unplugged music plus events for readers from the floor and the Open Section. The night is bisected by supper outside in the courtyard. Fourth Wednesday night of every month from February to November inclusive.
Doors open 7.30 pm; finishes 10.30 pm approx.
$10 entry includes supper and drinks.

Gugubarra Poetry at Rudolf Steiner House
Held in the rooms of Rudolf Steiner House, 307 Sussex St in the city, Gugubarra invites poets to read in the language of their choice. Often also features music, song, paintings, plays and dance as well as discussion of a chosen theme. The name Gugubarra honours the Wiradjuri origin of ‘Kookaburra’. The gatherings celebrate poetry and other arts including the art of conversation. It’s an initiative to bring together people from diverse creative disciplines and backgrounds held 3 or 4 times a year.

North Shore Poetry Project
Poetry dinner and reading held quarterly from March. Friendly and relaxed event, non-poets and people new to poetry are most welcome. Feature poets read for 20 minutes each; open mic poets read 1 poem of no more than 2 minutes. Feature poets’ books are usually available for purchase. Past feature poets are Judith Beveridge, Stephen Edgar, Melinda Smith, Peter Boyle, David Malouf, Kevin Hart. We have also produced 2 books of the poems read at these events: A Patch of Sun, and recently, The Intimacy of Strangers.
$36 a head with drinks at discount prices ($6 a glass of wine). Drinks, coffee and desert are extra; $5 of this fee goes as a tax exempt donation to the NGO Westwords which supports young writers in Sydney’s western suburbs.

Poets at Petersham Bowlo
Open Mic soirée: poems, short stories, comedy, acoustic music held on the 3rd Thursday of the month. A friendly, encouraging ethos and atmosphere. All types of poetry welcome in two sessions, sometimes with musical performance, with 20 minutes intermission; 5 mins per person in each session. Performance poets can request extension of time if practicing for an upcoming show. We publish an annual anthology: anyone who has presented original material in that year is welcome to submit work. We have a table for the sale of books (all proceeds go to the author).
Petersham Bowling Club, 77 Brighton St, Petersham, Sydney. Walk from Petersham station or Parramatta Road buses. Parking in surrounding streets. The bar is open till usually 10pm, bistro until 9pm. Happy hour at the bar from 5 until 6pm. Wheelchair access through cellar to the downstairs Green Room. The Bowl is a no-pokies pub.

The Poetry Night at Sappho: AVANT GAGA
Poetry reading with guest poets and open mic held on the second Tuesday of the month. The Poetry Night at Sappho, situated in the cafe courtyard at Sappho books, has become a Sydney institution for its exciting atmosphere and mix of established and emerging poets from all around the country and overseas.

Word in Hand
Performance & open mic held on the first Tuesday of every second month. Word in Hand is Sydney’s premier and most diverse performance and storytelling gig. Expect to see poetry, rhyme, song, movement and more by artists from across the nation and the world. Their work will light a fire under your belly and in your heart.
The Red Rattler, 6 Faversham St, Marrickville, Sydney. Access from Sydenham train station or buses along Victoria or Sydenham roads. Parking available at the venue. Venue has a wide entry, relatively flat floor and functioning accessible bathroom — we’re more than happy to accommodate additional access requests.
Doors open 7pm for 7.30pm start. $10/$15 /$20.
The Sydney Poetry Lounge
The Sydney Poetry Lounge is a relaxed event held at The Friend in Hand Pub in Glebe, on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. The night consists of 10 open mic slots (3 minutes each), and one, or two feature poets produced by poet, Ali Whitelock and MC’d by writer, blogger and reviewer, Sheree Strange. Everyone is welcome on the warm and super inclusive Sydney Poetry Lounge stage upstairs.
